Firstly, it depends on the amount or 'degree' of hatred.
The occasional dislike of another person is unavoidable, there will always be some.
The cause? I think it is usually one of the following:
-The person you hate has given you good reasons to hate them [for example, stolen from you]
-The person hating another person has insecurities or is jealous
-Lack of understanding between two people
The second and third point applying to things like prejudice and racism.
